Byzantine Catholic Chant Workshop
At this year’s Sacred Liturgy Conference, we are pleased to offer a special Byzantine Catholic Chant Workshop, open to both beginners and experienced singers.
While the conference traditionally emphasizes the beauty and heritage of Gregorian chant, the celebration of the Divine Liturgy within the Byzantine Catholic tradition offers a distinct and equally profound musical expression of the Church’s prayer. Byzantine chant possesses its own ancient history, unique tonal system, and deeply contemplative character—marked by rich melodic lines, flowing rhythm, and a powerful sense of sacred reverence.
The workshop will be led and taught by Fr. Zacharias, a monk of Holy Transfiguration Monastery who brings deep experience in the living tradition of Eastern Christian chant and liturgical prayer.
This workshop will introduce participants to the style, spirituality, and practice of Byzantine Catholic chant, exploring:
The distinctive sound and structure of Byzantine liturgical music
Fundamental vocal techniques and chant tones
The role of chant in the Divine Liturgy
Practical preparation for participation in the conference’s Byzantine liturgy
Participants will gain both an appreciation for this venerable tradition and practical experience in singing its sacred melodies. Whether you are new to Byzantine chant or already familiar with liturgical music, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to encounter the beauty and theological depth of the Church’s Eastern musical heritage.
Join us in discovering a different voice of the Church’s worship—one that complements and enriches our shared devotion to sacred liturgy.
